Slovak historiography commonly involves publications about important topics from the 18th to the 20th century. There are numerous scientific monographs, syntheses, studies, articles, and the like. In contrast, publications intended for university education are significantly underrepresented in domestic literature. As a result, the authors decided to fill a part of this gap by writing a new university textbook. The university textbook covers the years 1740 to 1945. It is primarily intended for teachers who wish to begin teaching history, but it is also a useful supplement for full-time and part-time students of history and history education. The textbook is available in both print and digital formats.<\/p>

\u00a0The core of the book is divided into eleven chapters, which together form three large thematic units. The first unit focuses on the period of Enlightenment absolutism in the Habsburg monarchy, which persisted from 1740 to 1792. The unit is divided into three chapters, each of which examines the impact of a different Enlightenment monarch: Maria Theresa, Joseph II, and Leopold II. The second unit of the book delves into key topics from the long 19th century. It is separated into four chapters that examine the national emancipation efforts of Slovaks during the monarchy and key documents from that time, association activities, and the phenomenon of emigration. The third unit looks at the most significant events in Slovak (Czechoslovak) history during the first half of the 20th century: the establishment of Czechoslovakia in 1918, the repercussions of the Munich Agreement, the dissolution of the republic in 1939, and the restoration of Czechoslovakia by the end of WWII.<\/p>

\u00a0The university textbook also includes a pedagogical section in addition to this historical section mentioned above. Each chapter in the book concludes with contemporary texts, questions, and exercises, as well as suggestions for further reading. Each piece of recommended literature includes a brief summary of its contents. Regarding the exercises, the authors primarily used complex tasks such as analysing a contemporary film, textual source or working with digital databases. The answers to these exercises are included in the electronic version of the book.
