44 phonemes and is based on the accent known as the Received Pronunciation (RP) \u2013 RP General Accent. This way of pronunciation of English is heard in the south of England. 12 pure vowels <em>\u0245<\/em><em> e \u026a \u0252 \u028b \u0259 \u00e6<\/em> \u0251: <em>i: \u037b: u: \u025c:,<\/em> 8 diphthongs <em>e\u026a <\/em>a<em>\u026a \u037b\u026a \u0259\u028b <\/em>a<em>\u028b \u026a\u0259 e\u0259 \u028b\u0259<\/em>, it means <strong>20 vowel-phonemes<\/strong> altogether plus <strong>24 distinctive consonant-phonemes<\/strong> <em>p t k b d g f v \u03b8 \u03b4 s z \u0283 \u0292 h \u02a7 \u02a4 l m n \u03b7 r j w<\/em> are included in the British English PI. In English, there occur triphthongs, i.e. <em>e\u026a\u0259 <\/em>a<em>\u026a\u0259 \u037b\u026a\u0259 \u0259\u028b\u0259 <\/em>a<em>\u028b\u0259<\/em>, but according to most phoneticians, they are generally defined as combinations of diphthongs and the schwa \/<em>\u0259<\/em>\/. As stated by Jones in <em>Cambridge English Pronouncing Dictionary<\/em>, \u201cthese three-vowel sequences are generally held to be composed of one of the diphthongs plus a\u00a0schwa\u201d (Jones, 2003, ix). A similar statement is found in Pavl\u00edk\u00b4s publication, when he says: \u201cTriphthongs are not considered phonemes in the traditional sense\u201d (Pavl\u00edk, 2000, p. 81). Trnka also supports this theory when he says that triphthongs always occur at the \u201cmorphemic boundary\u201d, e.g. <em>low-er, employ-er, pray-er<\/em> (Trnka, 2014, p. 34).<\/p><p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Many characteristic features of the British English variety could be applied to the <strong>American English<\/strong> variety, too, though, of course, there also exist specific differences. They are manifested not only in pronunciation, but also in vocabulary, spelling, some grammatical features, and strategies of discourse.<\/p><p style=\"text-align: justify;\">American English includes <strong>17 vowel phonemes<\/strong> including 11 monophthongs <em>\u0245<\/em> \u025b<em> \u026a \u028a \u0259 \u00e6 \u0251 i \u037b u \u025c <\/em>and 6 diphthongs <em>e\u026a <\/em>a<em>\u026a \u037b\u026a o\u028a <\/em>a<em>\u028a j\u028a. <\/em>In contrast to British English, there are no diphthongs with the schwa as the second segment. American English is a rhotic variety, it means that the schwa is not pronounced syllable-finally. The same feature results in the absence of triphthongs. American English <strong>consonant <\/strong>phonemes are almost the same as the British English consonants: <em>p t k b d g f v \u03b8 \u03b4 s z <\/em><em>\u0283 \u0292 h \u02a7 \u02a4 l m n <\/em><em>\u03b7 \u0279 j w<\/em>, only the quality of <em>\u0279<\/em> differs. While \/<em>r<\/em>\/ is defined as post-alveolar in RP, it is described as retroflex or tap in GA.
