Voicing of speech sounds is caused by the vocal folds activity \u2013 the vocal folds vibrate<\/strong> during the articulation of the consonants defined as voiced<\/strong>, as well as during the articulation of vowels, because they are naturally pronounced as voiced.<\/p>\n

When the vocal folds do not vibrate<\/strong> during articulation of speech sounds, it means that the vocal folds are inactive, voiceless <\/strong>consonants are pronounced.<\/p>\n

Voiceless consonants<\/strong> \u201chave a shortening effect<\/strong> on sounds preceding them within a syllable\u201d, so \/e<\/em>\u026a\/ <\/em>is pronounced shorter in mate<\/em> \/m<\/em>e<\/em>\u026at\/<\/em> than in made<\/em> \/m<\/em>e<\/em>\u026ad\/ <\/em>(Jones, 2003, p. xi) because t<\/em> is a voiceless consonant whereas d<\/em> is a voiced one. Instead of the word shortening<\/em>, the term clipping<\/em> is also used as its equivalent.<\/p>\n

The fact that voiceless consonants have really no voice in their pronunciation is easily verified if we place a voiceless consonant word-finally, e.g. stop \/st<\/em>\u0252<\/em>p\/. <\/em>Focusing our attention on the final consonant, in this case \/p\/<\/em>, we hear only something as \u201cwhispering\u201d in its pronunciation, there is really no \u201caudible voice\u201d present.<\/p>\n

Vibration of the vocal folds is felt when we put our hand on the throat. We can feel the trembling of this organ because it is located in the larynx behind the Adam\u00b4s apple, so we can \u201creach\u201d it easily.<\/p>\n

Voiced consonants either have their voiceless counterparts, or there are no voiceless partners from the point of view concerning voicing.
