style=\"text-align: justify;\">Jones recognises two terms used for classifying consonants according to \u201cforce of articulation\u201d. These are <strong>fortis<\/strong> or <strong>lenis<\/strong>. The terms \u201cimply that the main distinguishing factor is the amount of energy used in their production (fortis consonants being made with greater energy than lenis)\u201d (Jones, 2003, p. x).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to Crystal, \u201cthe force with which the consonants are articulated\u201d captures the differences between consonant pairs in which the contrast in voicing is present. Defining the fortis and lenis consonants, \u201cvoiceless consonants are produced with much greater force than their voiced counterparts\u201d (Crystal, 2011, p. 243), so the terms <em>fortis (strong)<\/em> and <em>lenis (weak) <\/em>identify the differences between these two groups:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">FORTIS: <strong>p, t, k, f,<\/strong><strong> \u03b8<\/strong><strong>, s, <\/strong><strong>\u0283,<\/strong> <strong>\u02a7<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">LENIS: <strong>b, d, g, v, \u00f0, z, \u0292, d\u0292<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Summing these definitions up, relatively <strong>strong muscular effort<\/strong> is needed when pronouncing <strong>fortis <\/strong>(i.e. voiceless) consonants, whereas <strong>little muscular effort<\/strong> is needed during pronunciation of <strong>lenis <\/strong>(i.e. voiced) consonants.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>PHONETICS AND PHONOLOGY Segmental Aspects FORCE OF ARTICULATION Jones recognises two terms used for classifying consonants according to \u201cforce of articulation\u201d.
